As soon as the watermark occurs, take a soft cloth and gently wipe it out. Don't apply too much pressure as you don't want to work the water into the wood. Use just enough pressure to wipe the stain off the surface. If minor damage has been done, however, try buffing the stain with an oil-based furniture polish will help.
