Red meat is a dark colored meat, usually the meat of adult mammals such as sheep, cows and horses is considered as red meat and rabbit and chicken meat is recognised as white meat. In western countries, most of the non vegetarians prefer eating red meat and if you are among them, then it is a must read for you.
According to the latest studies, red meat may enhance the risk of bowel cancer. It contains large amount of iron which is also responsible for its dark red color. To test this fact, a research was done on the mice, those who were given low iron diet were cancer free though there gene was defective but when it functioned normally high iron levels did no harm. On the other hand mice with the defective gene when given high iron intake had more chances of getting caught up with the disease.
Deputy Director of the Cancer Research UK Institute added, “We've made a huge step in understanding how bowel cancer develops. The APC gene is faulty in around eight out of 10 bowel cancers but until now we haven't known how this causes the disease."
But the study clearly indicated that iron play a crucial role in the development of bowel cancer in people with a faulty APC gene.
So, we hope you have justified reasons of staying away from red meat!
