Filmmaker Prakash Jha in his career spanning of 17 years has come up with various films on issues like caste, politics, feudalism and law and order in his favourite state, Bihar. In fact this 60-year-old director is considered as one of the most politically engaged filmmakers.
And now he is turning his attention to the charged issue of Maoism in his next film Chakravyuh. For the research related to the film, he travelled through the Red Corridor.
Quiz him about his experience and he says, “The root cause for this social unrest is primarily our feudal mindset which creates systems to benefit a few and exploit the rest. Our democracy begins and ends with an election. The problem with democracy is that unless it has equal participation by everybody in the real sense it does not work.”
“The Maoists feel that when the country was not independent they could live in the forest and survive. Post independence the government has taken over their land, they feel left out as they have no access to a better life. The government communicates with them through forest officials and guards who exploit them. Unki Murgi bhi utha lete hain aur unki ladki bhi.”
He says that through his film he bringing this issue in the public domain and trying to warn the population of this country to wake up as they are sitting on a time bomb waiting to explode.
