Post the success which came his way with Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster, director Tigmanshu Dhulia is now gearing up for his upcoming release Paan Singh Tomar, said to be based on the real life of the sportsman-turned-dacoit from Chambal.
But ask Dhulia and he says that Tomar is not portrayed as a dacoit but a rebel in the film. It is notable that Tomar being a national steeplechase champion for seven straight years quit the sport and the army to become a Bandit King of the Chambal Valley.
Talking about Tomar, the director said, "As a director, for me Tomar was not a dacoit but a rebel. He is someone who had struggled a lot in his life”. He even added that before making the film he first learned about Tomar while working on the sets of Shekhar Kapur`s Bandit Queen in Chambal. Considering the fact that Tomar was largely forgotten despite holding several records, he resolved to make a film about his life. He researched the film`s background for two years, interviewed Tomar`s surviving family members and even visited his native village in Bhind.
Actor Irrfan Khan who is playing Dhulia’s Tomar in the film said, "It was a challenge for me to play Tomar. His life was full of uncertainty and confusion. I tried to portray him as he actually was in order to do justice to the role”.
All things would get clear once the film hits the screens on March 2. Let’s see how many viewers agree with Dhulia!
