The last few days have been really low for All India Tennis Association as they have been in a fix regarding the selection of tennis players pairing for London Olympics. And here comes another big shock for them.
After Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna's rebellion, it was Leander Paes's turn to drop a bombshell on Wednesday.
In a strongly-worded letter to the AITA, the highest-ranked player of the trio of doubles specialists threatened to withdraw from the Olympics if he was made to play with someone ranked 207 or 306, while the second and third-best players from another team after refusing to play with him.
Paes's strong stand pushed the already-hassled AITA into an even tighter corner, forcing the administrators to postpone the announcement of the team to literally the last possible minute. Leander Paes reacted strongly on Wednesday and said in an e-mail addressed to AITA secretary general Bharat Oza that he would be happy to play with any player AITA chooses if Bhupathi and Bopanna were unwilling to pair with him.
But in case AITA now decides to send two teams, to accommodate Bhupathi and Bopanna's demand of pairing them together, it "would not be acceptable" to him.
We really find it’s shameful that the players are unable to put their egos aside even when the reputation of their country is at stake! Tut-tut!
Now Leander Paes drops a bombshell for AITA; won't go to Olympics with a rookie!
