Films depicting the harsh realities of society can never be expected to run smoothly. Hurdles and roadblocks are a common scenario for them.
And the latest one to face issue far ahead of hitting the production floor is Madhuri Dixit’s Gulab Gang. Buzz has it that the film has landed into trouble with a women’s group in Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region. This group works under the name Gulabi Gang headed by Sampat Pal and this group as heard, voices against domestic abuse. Sampat has alleged that the film is completely based on her life and her group’s work. She even stated stories relating to the film’s plot.
Buzz states that she has threatened the film’s team of taking the legal route and has asked the makers for compensation. Jaiprakash Shivhare, the national co-ordinator for Gulabi Gang, says, “Hum saral log hai (we are simple people). We want Madhuriji and the makers to take us into confidence. At least meet us. We run a group that helps women in distress. But we are skeptical as to how all of this will be shown. Also, since all films are made with the intention of profit, it would be great if they can give us some compensation. We can help women with that money.”
Anubhav Sinha, who is at the helm of directing this film said, “What compensation? Who is writing the film? (Writer-director) Soumik Sen, right? So, how do the members know whether it has anything to do with them? There’s no question of any kind of misrepresentation. Also, it’s too early for anyone to talk about the film”.
Anubhav aims to release the film during International Women’s Day next year. It would be interesting to see if the film will get over such troubling issues by then!
