As London Olympics are round the corner, the All India Tennis Association's selection committee, which convenes on Friday, has a simple task before it and that is undoubtedly to pick the best team or teams for the London Olympics.
With three doubles specialists - Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathiand Rohan Bopanna - and the option of fielding two pairs for the men's event and one combination for the mixed doubles should Sania Mirza's wildcard come through, the competition is severe.
The way to go probably would be for the selectors to allow the team that has been playing together all year - Bhupathi and Bopanna - to continue their partnership while Paes, the highest ranked Indian at No.7, partners Somdev Devvarman or Yuki Bhambri. That way India has two entries in the men's doubles.
Bhupathi and Paes have played four Olympics together, three of them - Sydney, Athens and Beijing - when feuding. Each time they came up against a tough team they failed to get their games on court. That's what happens when individuals are forced to come together. Its important then for selectors to send the best Indian team/teams and not necessarily throw their two best players together: A and B don't necessarily make a team just because one follows the other in rankings.
So, now the final decision is left on selectors and we hope they come out with best team!
